The National Institutes of Health (NIH) issued a new policy on data management and sharing for data generated from NIH-funded or -conducted research that went into effect on Jan. 25, 2023. Chief among the new requirements is for researchers to develop and submit a data management and sharing plan as part of the grant application process. As academic institutions prepare to meet a greater demand among researchers on their campuses given the NIH policy, sharing existing tactics and expected strategic opportunities is critical to meeting this demand.
The AAMC, the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries, and the Association of Research Libraries conducted a research project to identify and uplift existing or proposed innovations in infrastructure, policies, and services for other institutions to reuse, build upon, or otherwise leverage to meet this NIH policy.
Relevant Initiatives for Institutional Readiness
The Federal Demonstration Partnership ran a pilot program with the NIH to generate greater consistency in data management and sharing plan requirements across the agency and mitigate administrative burden for researchers in developing and implementing data management and sharing plans.
