The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on April 29 released its Plan for Promoting Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Automated and Algorithmic Systems by State, Local, Tribal, and Territorial Governments in Public Benefit Administration, as required by Executive Order 14110 “Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence” [refer to Washington Highlights, Nov. 3, 2023]. The plan outlined a list of recommendations and risks for the use of AI to enhance public benefits program administration or otherwise impact the health care sector. The agency examined key areas of concern such as privacy, safety, security, the potential for bias, and fraud and emphasized the importance of equitable development and use of AI.
