Sen. Bill Cassidy, MD (R-La.), ranking member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, released a May 9 white paper with proposals intended to maximize the effectiveness of current funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), sustain the United States’ international competitiveness in biomedical research, and restore public trust in science. The white paper synthesizes responses to Cassidy’s September 2023 request for information (RFI) on NIH reform, including proposals on the NIH’s basic research portfolio, research redundancies and duplication, the application and peer review process, public-private partnerships, the biomedical research workforce, research integrity, and the NIH’s grant management process, among other topics.
