Dr. Wilson was the first African American dean of an accredited nonminority medical school and was key to the University of Maryland School of Medicine's emergence as a leading national research institution.

Award for Distinguished Research in the Biomedical Sciences
Max D. Cooper, M.D.

A pediatrician by training, Dr. Cooper's trailblazing research with another animal species—the chicken—led to some of the most important organizing principles of the immune system.

Due to Dr. Schroeder's research, leadership and advocacy, smoking prevalence in the United States has reached a modern low, and the issue of tobacco cessation has been elevated onto the national policy agenda.
