Robert G. Petersdorf Scholar-in-Residence Program

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) provides opportunities for faculty and administrators of medical schools and teaching hospitals who have been granted a sabbatical leave by their home institutions to spend time at the association as a Robert G. Petersdorf Scholar-in-Residence.

To be eligible for the scholar-in-residence program, an individual must have at least seven years of relevant professional experience. Participants in the program must arrange to work with AAMC for a period of at least six months, and at most one year. The scholar must be on site at AAMC offices at least 50 percent of his or her term as a Petersdorf Scholar-in-Residence.

To apply for the program, interested individuals should identify the AAMC division in which they would like to work and contact the corresponding member of the Leadership Team. A written proposal must be submitted for a project that contributes to the strategic priorities of the association. The proposal must set forth the project's purpose, rationale, and design, and must indicate work products likely to result from the completion of the project. The proposal must include a budget for any expenses associated with the project, such as travel, equipment, and printing. AAMC will provide office space and equipment, limited administrative support, use of its reference center and staff, and access to data resources. Access to data resources must be approved by the appropriate data steward(s) as part of the project review before Scholar-in-Residence status is awarded.

Acceptance into the program is contingent upon approval of the proposal by the appropriate AAMC chief and the president.

Individuals who are accepted into the program will work under the general guidance of the chief who participated in the proposal's development. The AAMC does not provide salary support for scholars-in-residence, but, by special arrangement, may provide some funds to help offset the expenses of living in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. AAMC will execute a written agreement with the scholar that will define the term of service, the resources that will be provided, and the work product(s) expected.
