Keynote Address

Cokie Roberts
Political Analyst for ABC News, NPR Senior News Analyst

Cokie Roberts

ABC News and National Public Radio commentator Cokie Roberts delivered the keynote address at the AAMC's 2007 annual meeting. Roberts, a board member for health research group Kaiser Family Foundation, offered a dose of her trademark political wit, aiming barbs at current and former political leaders on both sides of the aisle.

Roberts also provided serious political insight on the issues most important to voters as the 2008 presidential primary season begins. Roberts said that health care was high on voters' agendas, and that the time was right for a national health care dialogue. While nothing is certain in politics, "Democrats are currently in a position where people are trusting them more" on health care, Roberts said. She added that, as the ranks of the uninsured swell, systemic health care problems are hitting home for a growing portion of the population.

"I think the reason health care has become such a hot issue is that it is a reflection of people's personal experiences, just as economic concerns are a result of the housing market and higher gas prices," said Roberts.
