Educating Physicians: A Call for Reform from the
Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching
Twice over the past 100 years, The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement
of Teaching has called for medical education reform. In1910, Abraham
Flexner stressed the importance of scientific research and educational
excellence in the training of physicians, which resulted in a transformation
of medical education. In 2010, the authors of a new report commissioned
by the Carnegie Foundation call for actions that will transform
medical education. The 2010 report, "Educating Physicians:
A Call for Reform," will be published by Jossey-Bass.

Creating Organizational Diversity and Inclusive
Environments
Academic medicine has a strong culture -a set of beliefs and assumptions,
often unspoken and unwritten, that guides individual and collective
behavior and shapes the way we do business. This focus session will
feature thought leaders exploring how academic medical centers can
address organizational obstacles and barriers to diversity and present
innovative solutions to create more inclusive environments that
promote excellence, learning, and professional development.

Leadership and Talent Management: A Roundtable Discussion
of Innovations in Recruitment
Do you know where your future leaders are? In good times and
bad, the cultivation, search, and recruitment of future-oriented
leaders must be a top priority for medical schools and teaching
hospitals. "Talent management" involves strategies such
as an organization-wide search process and structure; integration
of leadership selection and organizational culture; and a link between
organizational assessment and leadership development. Yet at many
organizations, the search and recruitment process remains a source
of complaint and consternation. This roundtable discussion will
feature thought leaders exploring how academic medical centers can
improve the ways they identify and recruit their top talent.

Training the Physicians of the Future: Integrating
Quality and Patient Safety into Our Educational Curriculum
Leading the continued development of high quality, cost
effective and patient-centered care requires that today's students
and trainees develop new knowledge and skills beyond those that
form the basis of traditional medical education. These include skills
in areas such as quality improvement, leadership, teamwork, and
behavioral competence, among others. The AAMC and the IHI have been
fostering the development of education and training in these areas,
at both the undergraduate and graduate education levels. This session
will highlight the rationale and needs for such education and illustrate
by example the innovative skill-building approaches that are being
used by AAMC member organizations to educate Tomorrow's Doctors.
