Overview
The AAMC Council of Academic Societies (CAS) is comprised of the
leadership of 89 academic societies devoted to biomedical and behavioral
research, medical education, and patient care. The collective membership
of these societies includes the majority of faculty members of American
medical schools and scientists engaged in life sciences research,
research training, and medical education. The CAS Spring Meeting
is a powerful forum for discussing and exchanging information of
common interest to its membership and for evaluating and recommending
policy initiatives for the Association. Its deliberations also play
a key role in shaping the public policy agenda of the member societies.
Who Should Attend
The designated representatives to the Council of Academic Societies
are the target audience for this meeting. The meeting is also open
to other elected leaders of CAS member societies, as well as to
Society senior executives.
Meeting Goals
The 2010 CAS Spring Meeting will explore the internal and external
drivers affecting institutions and their faculty as they seek to
recognize and shape their institutional identities. The meeting
also will consider tensions in academic medicine and offer suggestions
on how shared values, objectives, and reward systems (both intrinsic
and extrinsic) can be better aligned and how faculty leaders can
lead change. Other sessions will focus on chair retention and recruitment
and focus on some of the critical issues facing faculty leaders,
including managing leadership role transitions, assisting faculty
and students in managing their career decisions, and facilitating
the many difficult conversations a faculty leader will have at every
phase of their career if they are to be effective. Special sessions
will discuss health care reform issues and the neuroscience of empathy.
