The only constant is CHANGE. Heard that one before? This wisdom
rings true now more than ever.
Whether you are contending with greater expectations on a smaller
budget; searching for new techniques to communicate better with
your leadership, donors, patients, alumni, and coworkers; or navigating
new organizational structures, reporting relationships, and job
responsibilities, by now you have probably become fairly adaptable
and accustomed to change.
But is there more to change than merely surviving and adapting?
Do you have the ability to harness and build your change capacity?
Can institutional advancement leaders become change catalysts? The
answer is a resounding "yes"!
The success of a medical school or teaching hospital depends on
how adaptable the institution is to changes in the marketplace.
Like these institutions, you too must be ready for continuous change.
And your department can develop strategies for leading change and
implementing best practices in institutional advancement.
This conference will offer more than 50 educational and networking
sessions for professionals working in alumni relations, development,
marketing, public affairs, and public relations at medical schools
and teaching hospitals in the U.S. and Canada. The conference format
includes general sessions, master classes, focused discussions,
and specialized sessions for one or more of the GIA's concentrated
disciplines.
And Tucsona city that has maintained its natural beauty while
growing at a record pace to accommodate new restaurants, attractions,
and spasoffers something for everyone! Join us in the desert
for an incredible four days that may change the way you think about
change!

Leadership Series: Dr. Andrew Weil
You may recognize Dr. Andrew Weil from appearances on Oprah,
Larry King Live, or The Today Show, but we're
fortunate to have him with our GIA audience. Dr. Weil, the
pioneer of integrative medicine and named one of "the
world's 100 most influential people" by TIME magazine,

Why Our Health Matters: a Vision of Medicine that can Transform
our Future.
In Why Our Health Matters, Dr. Weil writes provocatively
about what has gone wrong with the American way of healthwhether
discussion about how medical schools should improve their
approach to educating future physicians, how insurance companies
stand in the way of excellent care, or how pharmaceutical
companies have come to rule how we live.
Dr. Weil directs the Integrative Medicine program at the University
of Arizona College of Medicine, a program viewed as the leading
effort in the world to develop a comprehensive curriculum
in integrative medicine. He is the founder of The Weil Foundation
which currently focuses on the reform of medical education.

Literary Luncheon with Abraham Verghese
Longtime GIA members may recall one of the most poignant GIA
Literary Luncheons ever held, when we had the pleasure of
hearing from Dr. Abraham Verghese in San Francisco in the
fall of 2002. He is back by popular demand!
Already acclaimed for his non-fiction work, including My
Own Country, which was based on his experiences treating
patients with HIV in Johnson City, Tennessee, Dr. Verghese's
first novel, Cutting for Stone explores his "joy
of medicine" through the lives of its main characterstwin
brothers born in Ethiopia and literally raised within a hospital
compound.
An award winning author with a MFA from the prestigious Iowa
Writer's Workshop, Dr. Verghese is board certified in internal
medicine and pulmonary and infectious diseases. He is currently
a tenured professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine,
where he is Senior Associate Chair for the Theory and Practice
