ePortfolios and Assessing Competence:
The Western Reserve2 Curriculum
Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine launched the
Western Reserve2 (WR2) curriculum in July 2006. This student-centered
curriculum focuses on the development of skills physicians need
for the practice of healthcare in the 21st century—skills
in reflection, self assessment and self-directed life long learning.
Taking its lead from the six ACGME competencies, the WR2 curriculum
was built with a competency-based educational design.

Summary of the GIR Leadership Institute
The third GIR Leadership Institute (GLI) demonstrated through both
the faculty and fellows the wealth of talent and dedication that
exists in today's academic medical centers. With the addition of
a new leader and several new faculty members the GLI continues to

it the forum for rising leaders in academic medicine.
Report on Organizational Models and Educational
Technology in U.S. and Canadian Medical Schools
This report examines the organizational structure of educational
technology units within U.S. and Canadian medical schools in order
to identify organizational models that support educational technology,
describe key attributes of these models and discuss the strengths
and challenges associated with these models.
GIR, in collaboration with the EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research
(ECAR), announces a new research study, IT
Engagement in Research: A View of Medical School Practice (PDF,
4 pages) analyzing the practices and perspectives of IT organizations
that support the academic research enterprise in medical schools
and colleges. An ECAR roadmap summary synthesizes important IT issues
and provides recommendations for action in higher education. A PDF
of the full report is available in the GIR members only section.
Electronic Health
Records Resources
In collaboration with other AAMC divisions, the GIR has developed
a Web resource containing links to information about electronic
health records. Please take a look and let us know if you have comments,
suggestions, or contributions.
Veteran's Affairs Issues and Resources
In early 2007, AAMC staff were contacted by constituents about increasing
confusion and concerns with respect to Veteran's Affairs (VA) policies
in several areas. The issues were raised by individuals with operational
responsibilities in areas such as clinical contracting, effort reporting,
and resident supervision. From those initial discussions, AAMC staff
felt that it would be useful to confer with a small group of constituents
to discuss the ways in which the AAMC could be helpful to our members
in their many interactions with the VA.
Academic Medical Center Security
and Privacy Conference and Webinar Series
On Feb. 13, the FISMA Impact on AMC/VA Medical Research Webinar
covered issues surrounding the recent U.S. Department of Veterans
Affairs (VA) Directive, which makes compliance with the Federal
Information Security Management Act of 2002 (FISMA) mandatory throughout
the department. This applies not just to clinical systems but to
"the security of all VA information and information systems, at
all levels of sensitivity and at any location or facility." This
directive has greatly impacted academic medical centers that conduct
research with VA facilities. Presenters discussed their experience
with FISMA and actions their organizations have taken.

Submits Language to Democratic Platform (PDF, 2 pages)
In a letter to the chairs of the Democratic Party Platform Committee
last week, AAMC President and CEO Darrell G. Kirch, M.D. asked the
committee to consider including in the party platform language noting
the "enormous contributions" made by medical schools and
teaching hospitals to the nation's health and well being. The letter
also calls for the party to support "a sustained federal investment"
in public health activities, including the work of the National

continue to promote policies that strengthen medical schools' and
teaching hospitals' core missions of medical education, patient
care, and medical research. A similar letter is being submitted
to the Republican Platform Committee.
