Medical Schools and Teaching Hospitals Respond to Bioterrorism

Medical schools and teaching hospitals are preparing medical students, educating residents and physicians, and making research contributions that will prepare the nation for biological, radiation, and chemical terrorism.

In response to the tragedies of September 11, 2001, the medical community immediately began to reevaluate how it educates and prepares physicians to respond to terrorist attacks. Medical schools and teaching hospitals across the country are already working to educate and prepare the nation's health workforce through a host of activities like the ones highlighted on this Web site.

The AAMC's bioterrorism initiative, First Contact, First Response, includes an educational plan to ensure that, in the future, the physician workforce will be prepared to respond appropriately to biological, radiation, and chemical terrorist attacks. The AAMC is involved in several collaborative efforts, including:

• a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (to join professionals in medicine and public health)
• membership in the Partnership for Community Safety (to improve bioterrorism response in local communities).
• monitoring congressional legislation and Bush administration activities related to bioterrorism preparedness and homeland security.
