Medical Schools and Teaching Hospitals Respond to Bioterrorism

Medical schools and teaching hospitals are preparing medical students, educating residents and physicians, and making research contributions that will prepare the nation for biological, radiation, and chemical terrorism.

The AAMC convened experts in medical education to determine relevant curriculum content that will better educate and train tomorrow's physicians about weapons of mass destruction.

In response to the tragedies of September 11, 2001, the medical community immediately began to reevaluate how it educates and prepares physicians to respond to terrorist attacks. Medical schools and teaching hospitals across the country are already working to educate and prepare the nation's health workforce through a host of activities like the ones highlighted on this Web site.

The AAMC's bioterrorism initiative, First Contact, First Response, includes an educational plan to ensure that, in the future, the physician workforce will be prepared to respond appropriately to biological, radiation, and chemical terrorist attacks.
