AAMC Welcomes NIH Director Collins

Bernard K. Jarvis, C.P.A.

The association hosted a reception for Dr. Francis S. Collins, the new director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), on Sept. 22.

The event, which also was attended by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, members of the AAMC governance, congressional representatives and their staff, provided an opportunity for the medical school, teaching hospital, and research community to congratulate Dr. Collins on his appointment and to informally discuss his goals and priorities.

In his remarks, Dr. Collins stressed the need to put a "face on science" because of the "great story" that the research community has to tell the public.  Secretary Sebelius praised the academic medicine community for the progress we have made in the research arena, as well as our recent efforts in health care reform.
