Summary

The AAMC has been closely tracking developments in National Institutes of Health (NIH) extramural funding and in Oct. 2026 published Tracking Two Years of Change in NIH Funding, which draws from the data on this page and provides additional analysis on grant terminations and FY 2025 and FY 2026 NIH awards compared to historical trends.

This page provides data on NIH extramural obligations between FY 2021 and FY 2026, drawing from NIH RePORTER. Data displayed in the figures and tables cover the full federal fiscal year (Oct. 1 - Sept. 30) and covers overall obligations, NIH Institute, Center, and Office (ICO)-specific obligations, awards by funding mechanism, competitive awards, and multiyear funding. This page is not currently being updated with FY 2027 data but will remain available as a resource for our community. It is complete based on data in NIH RePORTER as of Oct. 12, 2026 and we will ensure the data on this page are complete when the NIH finalizes the FY 2026 obligations later this year.
