On Feb. 12, AAMC director of government relations, Ally Perleoni, was named to Modern Healthcare’s inaugural 40 under 40 list. The award recognizes “rising stars” in health care and highlights their contributions and accomplishments.

The recognition specifically highlighted Perleoni’s work to expand Medicare-supported graduate medical education (GME) for the first time in nearly 25 years [refer to Washington Highlights, Dec. 23, 2020]. “She really did help land those [GME] slots by crafting an argument for lawmakers that helped them see the issue less as a partisan one than one especially important to anyone who needs a doctor, such as people in rural areas,” Modern Healthcare noted in its profile of Perleoni, “Then she helped score another boost last year to specifically target the opioid and mental health crises.”

Upon learning of her award, Perleoni stated, “GME is a bipartisan issue that impacts patients in every community across the country, and I’m proud of the work we’ve done with our member institutions and congress to expand support for GME, help alleviate the physician shortage, and connect patients to the care that they need.” Her colleague, AAMC senior director of government relations Len Marquez noted, “Ally is a great colleague and incredibly committed to our members and their missions. I’m very proud of the work she has done to increase bipartisan support for physician training and engage others in the GME community to help advance our goal of improving the health of all people.”
