The AAMC joined 215 organizations in a letter urging congressional leadership to extend important telehealth waivers. Congress temporarily extended a series of waivers implemented during the COVID-19 public health emergency that included the removal of geographic restrictions and the expansion of originating sites for telehealth services, as well as flexibility for providers to continue to provide audio-only telehealth services in the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023 (P.L. 117-73) [refer to Washington Highlights, Jan. 4, 2023]. The Feb. 22 letter to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) highlighted the importance of extending the waivers well before their expiration on Dec. 31 in order to ensure certainty for Medicare patients and providers.
