The AAMC sent a letter to Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee Chair Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on July 24 regarding his recently introduced legislation, the Primary Care and Health Workforce Expansion Act [refer to Washington Highlights, July 21]. In the letter, the AAMC expressed its appreciation for Sanders’ proposed investments in key programs such as the National Health Service Corps, Children’s Hospitals Graduate Medical Education, Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education, and Medicare-supported graduate medical education. The letter expressed serious concern, however, that the legislation contained drastic cuts to hospital outpatient departments and noted that these cuts could have negative consequences for vulnerable patients. The AAMC reiterated its willingness to work with Sanders to strengthen and expand the health care workforce.
