AAMC Submits Amicus Brief Supporting Injunction Against Travel Ban Proclamation

Matthew Shick, Sr. Director, Gov't Relations & Regulatory Affairs

The AAMC March 27, joined by 34 organizations representing a wide range of health care professions and medical specialties, filed an amicus brief urging the Supreme Court to reinstate the nationwide injunction against the Trump Administration Proclamation 9645 that indefinitely bars individuals from entering the United States on the basis of their nationality.

AAMC President and CEO Darrell G. Kirch, MD, issued a statement on the amicus brief, noting, “International health professionals provide essential care in teaching hospitals and their communities, particularly for rural and underserved populations. … Excluding talented physicians and scientists based solely on their nationality jeopardizes patient care and medical discoveries and compromises the health security of the nation.”

In a March 16 statement on Match Day, Dr. Kirch also raised concern that “uncertainty surrounding … physician immigration introduced new challenges into this year’s residency application process.”

This is the third amicus brief filed by the AAMC and health organizations to the Supreme Court in response to cases challenging immigration executive actions.
