The House Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee held an April 17 hearing entitled “Examining Health Sector Cybersecurity in the Wake of the Change Healthcare Attack.” The purpose of the hearing was to discuss the recent cyberattack on Change Healthcare, a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, that occurred on Feb. 21. Witnesses for the hearing included John Riggi, national advisor for cybersecurity and risk at the American Hospital Association, and other experts in health care cybersecurity.

Throughout the hearing, members of the subcommittee raised strong concerns about the cyberattack, and in particular, the imperative to safeguard patient data during such breaches. Witnesses highlighted the rising attacks against health care providers and the need for government support and financing — rather than reprimand — for victims of cyberattacks. No representatives from UnitedHealth Group or Change Healthcare were present at the hearing.
