    On Tuesday, July 18, 2017, the Group on Student Affairs (GSA) - Committee on Student Diversity Affairs (COSDA) hosted the webinar “Free Speech in the Landscape of Diversity”. During this 60-minute webinar, representatives from AAMC member institutions will discuss the legal parameters of constitutionally protected speech and the role of institutional leaders in enabling the exercise of 1st amendment rights while ensuring safe space in the learning environment. Panelists will also discuss the legal precedent from past cases with suggested strategies for handling difficult free speech issues.

    By the end of this webinar participants will be able to:

    • Understand the parameters of free speech and the implications for leaders in academic medicine
    • Anticipate the potential impacts of silence in response to problematic speech, incidents, or activities
    • Demonstrate promising practices for leveraging free speech to support marginalized and targeted populations
    • Develop an incident response plan that enables free speech while maintaining a welcoming and inclusive medical school environment
