The AAMC joined over 80 other national organizations in a July 26 letter urging congressional leadership to pass the Preventing Maternal Deaths Reauthorization Act of 2023 (H.R. 3838). This legislation, which was recently marked up and advanced by the House Energy and Commerce Committee, would reauthorize federal support for state-based maternal mortality review committees through fiscal year 2028 [refer to Washington Highlights, July 21]. Absent congressional action, authorization for these programs is set to expire at the end of the current fiscal year on Sept. 30. The legislation would also direct the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services to disseminate best practices on the prevention of maternal deaths.
