How Do Applicants Request Letters Through the AAMC Letter Writer Portal?

Applicants do not use the system directly. Corresponding letter requests are generated by applicants through the AAMC application service they use to apply.

Which Services Use the AAMC Letter Writer Portal?

Currently, the Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) and the American Medical College Application Service® (AMCAS®) manage letters through the AAMC Letter Writer Portal.

Each participating service has different policies and procedures that may affect how you use the AAMC Letter Writer Portal. Visit the service specific webpages (linked above) to learn more about each service’s guidelines for submitting a letter of evaluation/recommendation.

What are the Benefits of Using the AAMC Letter Writer Portal?

All Letter Writers Can:

  • Easily access requests through their email accounts without having to search by request ID.
  • Submit letters with or without an AAMC account when accessing directly from the request email.

Are There More Features I Can Use as an AAMC Account User?

Letter writers can log into the portal to better manage their work with the updated dashboard. The dashboard enhancements include:

  • Enhanced request search, filter, and sorting for both completed AND pending requests.
  • Expanded history of all requests, including submitted documents.
  • Guidance for submitting updated letters according to service policy.
    • Each participating service has different policies and procedures that may affect how you use the AAMC Letter Writer Portal (file size, resubmission requirements, tips for what to include in your letters, etc.). Visit the service specific webpages (linked above) to learn more.

Letter writers with AAMC accounts can also have requests automatically matched to their AAMC account based on how an applicant sends the request (see Tips for Managing Large Number of Requests section to learn more).

Tips for Managing Large Number of Letter Requests

1) If you typically receive a large number of letter requests each year, you will benefit from the AAMC Letter Writer Portal request matching capabilities.

Instruct learners to send their requests to your AAMC account email address through the application service they are applying to. This is the email address matching the AAMC account you use to submit letters.

2) When you log into the AAMC Letter Writer Portal, all requests should be waiting for you on the Pending tab of the dashboard.

If a request is missing, you can add it using the Add Request feature, or by accessing the request through the link in the request email and logging into your AAMC account.
