Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), and Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) led letter signed by 25 other Democratic senators urging Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Seema Verma to withdraw the proposed Medicaid Fiscal Accountability Regulation (MFAR).

In the letter, the senators expressed their “serious concern” regarding MFAR and noted that it “would have disastrous consequences for the Medicaid program and the millions of individuals it serves, and we request that CMS withdraw the proposed rule.”

The proposed rule would significantly change state Medicaid financing and dramatically reduce supplemental payments for providers. The AAMC submitted comments to CMS on Jan. 31 opposing the proposal for a variety of reasons and asked the agency to withdraw it immediately [see Washington Highlights, Jan. 31].
