The House Education and Workforce Committee held a July 12 markup to consider several pieces of legislation related to health care price transparency. The committee marked up and passed four pieces of legislation, including the Transparency in Billing Act (H.R. 4509), legislation that would require a unique identifier number of off-campus hospital outpatient departments and require its inclusion on all commercial claims. Should providers fail to include the unique identifier on claims, the legislation would prevent health plans from paying claims and the hospital from collecting payment from the beneficiary. Additionally, the legislation would impose civil monetary penalties on hospitals that violate the requirement.

The AAMC has opposed burdensome reporting and transparency requirements [refer to Washington Highlights, May 5].
