The AAMC joined an April 1 group letter to U.S. Trade Representative Jameison Greer (PDF) outlining concerns with the impacts to the health care system of proposed tariffs on medical and dental supplies, equipment, and devices. The letter described the financial pressures facing health care providers, noting that tariffs on medical devices would only further exacerbate these challenges. The letter concluded by specifically requesting that these goods be exempt from tariffs to “prevent the further escalation of health care costs and ensure patient access to these products.”

The Trump administration on April 2 announced a 10% baseline tariff on most U.S. imports. Pharmaceuticals were temporarily exempted from these tariffs, but medical supplies, equipment, and devices were not.
