The AAMC was asked to respond and provide feedback on a bipartisan Medicare GME Working Group draft proposal outline (PDF) focusing on several key policy issues. The proposal, released by Senate Finance Committee Chair Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and seven Finance Committee colleagues, seeks to address physician workforce shortages, challenges faced by rural and other underserved communities to accessing care, barriers to rural physician training, improved data collection and transparency, as well as other topics.

In a press release, the working group stated, “It has become clear that there are not enough physicians to meet the health care needs of Americans. As a bipartisan group of members of the Senate Finance Committee, which has jurisdiction over the Medicare Graduate Medical Education program, we are interested in advancing additional Medicare GME proposals to address health care workforce shortages and gaps.”
