    Nathan Selden, MD, PhD, has been named dean of the Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine. He had been serving as interim dean since February. A 2023-24 Council of Deans fellow, Dr. Selden previously served as the Mario and Edith Campagna Chair of Pediatric Neurological Surgery and as professor of neurological surgery at the OHSU School of Medicine.

    David Guzick, MD, PhD, was appointed dean of LSU Health Shreveport School of Medicine, effective June 7. Dr. Guzick will continue to serve as chancellor of the university and as a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the medical school. He formerly served as dean of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry from 2002-09. Dr. Guzick succeeds David Lewis, MD, MBA, who has served as dean of the medical school since June 2018.

    Robert Grossman, MD, has announced plans to retire as dean of NYU Grossman School of Medicine and CEO of NYU Langone at the end of August. Dr. Grossman has served in the role since 2007. A neuroradiologist, Dr. Grossman helped create NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine, the only medical school in the United States that offers a three-year M.D. degree focused on primary care and full-tuition scholarships.

    William Wertheim, MD, MBA, who has been serving as the interim executive vice president of Stony Brook Medicine, has been promoted to executive vice president. Dr. Wertheim is additionally president of the Stony Brook Medicine Community Medical Group.

    Margaret “Maggie” McDonald, PhD, MFA, associate vice chancellor for academic and global affairs, health sciences, at the University of Pittsburgh, has announced plans to retire in January 2025. Jessica Griffin Burke, PhD, MHS, vice dean for the university’s School of Public Health, will assume the role of associate vice chancellor for global affairs, health sciences, effective Sept. 1, partnering with Dr. McDonald through a transition period. Dr. McDonald, who also holds appointments as associate professor of epidemiology at the school of public health and associate professor of psychiatry at the school of medicine, joined the University of Pittsburgh 40 years ago after a career as a science and medical journalist in Washington, D.C.

    The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) named Dan Voth, PhD, as vice chancellor for research and innovation. He will be responsible for defining the strategy and vision for research and seeking to enhance research activities across all UAMS colleges. Dr. Voth joined UAMS in 2009 and has served as chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology.

    Rana Chakraborty, MD, DPhil, has been named the Adrienne Arsht Endowed Chair in Pediatric Clinical Research at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine and chief of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at University of Miami Health System and Jackson Health System. Dr. Chakraborty is a pediatric infectious disease specialist and comes to the Miller School of Medicine with more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and is a principal investigator on two NIH grants.

    Virginia Weldon, MD, died on May 23 in St. Louis at the age of 88, after a long and distinguished career in academic medicine. She joined the faculty of the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis in 1968 and rose to become deputy vice chancellor for medical affairs and vice president of the Washington University Medical Center. Dr. Weldon served the AAMC as its first woman chair in 1985-86. Additionally, President Bill Clinton appointed her to the President's Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology, and she was a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

    Herbert Pardes, MD, died April 30 at the age of 89 after a long and distinguished career in academic medicine. He was president and CEO of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital from 2000 to 2011 and previously served as dean of the Faculty of Medicine and chair of the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. A psychiatrist by training dedicated to improving the lives of people with mental illness, Dr. Pardes also served as director of the National Institute of Mental Health and is a past president of the American Psychiatric Association. He served the association as chair of the AAMC Board of Directors from 1995-96 and as chair of the Council of Deans from 1994-95. He additionally served on the Council of Academic Societies’ Administrative Board — the predecessor to CFAS — from 1986-1989.

    David Korn, MD, died at age 91 in Boston. He served the AAMC from 1997 to 2008, first as senior vice president of biomedical research and then as chief scientific officer, before stepping down to become vice provost for research at Harvard University. During his tenure, Dr. Korn led the AAMC and the broader academic medicine community to manage financial conflicts of interest. As leader of what is now called the AAMC Scientific Affairs cluster, Dr. Korn oversaw the Council of Academic Societies — the predecessor to CFAS. During a long and distinguished career as a scientist and academic leader in medicine, he served as vice president and dean of the school of medicine, founding chair of the department of pathology, and professor of pathology at Stanford University from 1984 to 1995. Dr. Korn was a member of the National Academy of Medicine and an AAAS Fellow.
