    GFA Priorities

    Our priorities as GFA members emphasize the critical role of teaching and research (scholarship) in an environment increasingly driven by clinical revenue demands. We are committed to upholding the core values of academic medicine, continually defining the roles and contributions of faculty members, and ensuring that our work contributes to institutional success. Some of our priorities are highlighted below.

    Emphasize the importance of teaching and research (scholarship) in an environment heavily influenced by the production of clinical revenue:

    • Highlight the tangible and intangible value of faculty.
    • Create guidelines and best practices related to transparent promotion.
    • Serve as a support system for regional deans and academic chairs.
    • Create future programming on best practices.
    • Enhance the AAMC’s Strategic Plan.

    Maintain the values of academic medicine and consistently define the roles and values of faculty members:

    • Empower faculty to navigate change through skill development.
    • Share ideas among faculty affairs professionals to use limited resources.
    • Coach faculty to define their roles at their organizations (even if these roles are nontraditional).
    • Advocate for medical centers to develop/modify policies, procedures, and infrastructure that value all missions in academic medicine.

    Maintain an environment of inclusion and wellness:

    • Continue to support the AAMC’s Strategic Plan and share the GFA’s advocacy for the implementation of programs, policies, and initiatives that work to create environments where everyone can thrive. 
    • Collaborate with and support the GDI and other affinity groups in advocating for environments where a variety of perspectives and backgrounds are valued and represented.
    • Monitor the well-being of faculty members at AAMC-member institutions through discussions with GFA representatives. 

    Ensure effective communication across key stakeholders during mergers and acquisitions of academic health centers:

    • Provide guidance for how leadership engaged in mergers and acquisitions activity should proceed with communication efforts during an organizational transformation.
    • Serve as a support system to membership by providing a series of webinars and panel discussions led by individuals with expertise to share best practices and examples of effective communication strategies. 
    • Provide a platform to share resources to assist GFA leaders in planning successful communication interventions.
    • Collaborate with other AAMC groups (e.g., the Group on Business Affairs, the Council of Faculty and Academic Societies).
